“Law holds the night in its iron grasp—yet even the oldest decree may one day be unshackled by shadows.”
The Sacred Canon is the unyielding body of laws that binds every creature of the Underworld—each Child of the Night held to its decrees under the ultimate penalty of death. Etched in the earliest days of the hidden realm, these edicts were shaped to shield the supernatural from mortal sight and to compel a fragile order among races long at war with one another.
Among the oldest and most unbending of these decrees was the Prohibition of the Cambion, a law that forbade the mingling of witch and incubus, lest their union bring forth a breed neither realm could control. Yet in the twelfth century, the Overlords themselves struck down this ancient prohibition without proclamation or plea.
For more than two centuries the reason lay buried in silence—an omission that whispers of a design more deliberate than chance, a secret sealed in shadow for those patient enough to seek the pattern beneath the centuries.
Even now, the parchment remembers the weight of that rescinded law, as if the ink itself resents being unbound.
THE SACRED CANON
The Bible of the Realms
Before kingdoms were crowned, before the ancient bloodlines were named,
before the Revenant Lords took their thrones, there was the Canon.
Before kingdoms were crowned, before the ancient bloodlines were named, before the Revenant Lords took their thrones, there was the Canon.
It was not written for mortals.
It was not written by kings.
It was the first covenant among the Children of the Unseen—a body of laws established to preserve the fragile balance between the worlds, to govern those who possessed the Old Blood, and to ensure that powers older than memory remained bound by ancient limits.
For countless generations, the Canon was preserved by the keepers of the Unseen. Its oldest articles concerned the Veil, the Blood, the Four Watchtowers, the sacred boundaries between the Genos, and the forbidden powers that no Child was permitted to disturb.
Then came the Age of the Revenants.
The Revenant Lords inherited the ancient Canon and declared themselves its guardians. Over centuries, they added their own decrees—laws concerning hierarchy, territory, creation, secrecy, allegiance, and punishment.
The Lords insisted that these additions merely preserved the ancient order.
But the distinction between preserving the Canon and controlling it slowly disappeared.
Thus two bodies of law came to exist beneath a single name:
The First Canon — the ancient laws of the Children of the Unseen.
The Revenant Canon — the laws imposed and interpreted by the Seven Lords.
And beneath them lies a third category.
The laws whose origins have been forgotten.
The laws whose meanings have been concealed.
The laws that appear arbitrary to those who obey them, yet which the oldest beings still follow without question.
These are known as the Unexplained Articles.
For the Canon does not merely govern the Realms.
It remembers what the Realms have forgotten.
And there are truths within it that were never meant to be rediscovered.
SACRED CANON
THE ORIGIN
Before the Lords, There Was the Law
No mortal knows when the first law of the Unseen was spoken.
The oldest records do not name a year, a kingdom, or even a speaker. They speak only of a time when the Children of the Unseen were still scattered across the world, when the boundaries between the seen and unseen were young, and when the powers that inhabited the darkness had not yet divided themselves into the orders known today.
There were no Revenant Lords.
This canon is sacred.
No courts. No recognized dominion.
There was only the Balance.
As the Genos multiplied and their powers grew, encounters between them became inevitable. Blood was spilled. Ancient territories were contested. The Veil weakened wherever the powers of the Unseen intruded too deeply into the mortal world.
It became clear that survival required more than strength.
It required law.
The first Children gathered beneath the protection of the Four Watchtowers—Fire, Earth, Wind, and Water—and established the principles by which the Unseen would henceforth be bound.
These became the first articles of the Sacred Canon.
They were not intended to create an empire.
They were intended to prevent one.
The Canon recognized that no single Genos could possess dominion over all others, that the mortal world could not be allowed to discover the true nature of the Unseen, and that certain ancient powers were never to be disturbed.
Above all, the Canon established a principle that would survive every age that followed:
"The Balance belongs to no one."
For centuries, the Canon was preserved through oral tradition, bloodline memory, sacred inscriptions, and the records kept by the oldest guardians of the Unseen.
Then the Revenants rose.
They did not destroy the Canon.
They claimed it.
The Seven Revenant Lords became its principal custodians, gathering the scattered laws into their archives and placing them beneath the authority of their courts. Over generations, they added decrees of their own, insisting that these new laws were necessary to protect the ancient order.
Some undoubtedly were.
Others served the interests of the Lords.
And others appeared to make no sense at all. Yet the oldest Revenants obeyed them.
Even when they could no longer explain why.
Thus the Canon became something greater—and more dangerous—than a simple book of laws.
It became a record of the things the Children of the Unseen had learned to fear.
Some laws preserve the Balance.
Some preserve power.
Some preserve secrets.
And some preserve warnings from an age so ancient that even the Seven have forgotten who first wrote them.
The Canon has survived kingdoms, wars, bloodlines, and the passing of centuries.
But its oldest law remains unchanged:
What was bound must remain bound.
THE TWO CANONS
One Law. Two Authorities.
What is known as the Sacred Canon is, in truth, composed of two distinct bodies of law. The first belongs to an age before the Revenants ruled. The second was established by those who came after. Though both are preserved within the same sacred records, they were born of different purposes.

THE FIRST CANON
The Ancient Laws of
the Children of the Unseen
The First Canon is the oldest law of the Realms.
Its purpose was not to establish kings, courts, or dominion, but to preserve the Balance.
It governs the fundamental relationship between the Mortal World and the Unseen, and establishes the boundaries by which the Children of the Unseen must exist.
Its oldest articles concern:
THE VEIL
The boundary between the seen and unseen worlds.
THE BALANCE
The principle that no Genos, power, or individual may possess absolute dominion.
THE BLOOD
The sacred nature of blood, bloodlines, creation, and transformation.
THE OLD BLOOD
The ancient mortal lineages whose existence carries significance beyond ordinary inheritance.
THE GENOS
The rights, boundaries, and obligations of the different Children of the Unseen.
THE WATCHTOWERS
The sacred guardianship of Fire, Earth, Wind, and Water.
THE DEAD
The boundary between life and death and the consequences of crossing it.
THE FORBIDDEN
Those powers, places, rituals, and beings that must never be disturbed.
The First Canon was never intended to make the Children equal.
They were not equal.
They were different by nature, by blood, and by power.
The Canon demanded something more difficult:
that difference should not become dominion.

THE REVENANT CANON
The Laws of the Seven Lords
When the Revenants rose to prominence, they inherited the First Canon and placed themselves at its head.
The Seven Lords became its guardians, judges, interpreters, and—eventually—its unquestioned authority.
But the ancient laws were not sufficient to govern a civilization.
So the Lords established additional articles.
These concerned the practical order of Revenant society:
CREATION
Who may create a Revenant, and under what authority.
HIERARCHY
The obligations imposed by rank and blood.
TERRITORY
The boundaries of Revenant dominion.
SECRECY
The protection of the Unseen from mortal discovery.
ALLEGIANCE
The duties owed to the Seven Lords.
JUDGMENT
The crimes, punishments, and powers of the Revenant courts.
THE LYCANS
The ancient relationship between the wolf clans and the Revenant order.
THE MORTALS
The permitted limits of influence over the human world.
Some of these laws protected the Realms.
Some protected the Revenants.
And some protected the Lords themselves.
THE TWO CANONS
THE DISTINCTION
The First Canon asks:
What must be preserved?
The Revenant Canon asks:
Who has the right to preserve it?
That distinction would remain almost invisible for centuries.
The Lords never claimed to have replaced the ancient law.
They claimed to have perfected it.
They called their additions interpretations.
Their subjects called them law.
And with every generation, the difference became harder to see.
Until the authority of the Seven was treated as indistinguishable from the authority of the Canon itself.
But the oldest records tell a different story.
The Canon existed before the Lords.
The Balance existed before the Canon.
And whatever power first established the ancient law did not give the Seven permission to rule forever.
It merely entrusted them with the keeping of what came before.
THE SACRED ARTICLES
The Laws That Bind the Realms
The Sacred Articles form the foundation of the First Canon.
They were established before the rise of the Revenant Lords, when the Children of the Unseen first recognized that power without restraint would eventually threaten the Balance itself.
The Articles do not concern the petty disputes of individuals.
They govern the things that cannot be permitted to fall into disorder:
the Veil, the Blood, the Genos, the Old Blood, the Watchtowers, the Dead, the Mortal World, and the powers that must remain Forbidden.
Their authority does not come from any throne.
It comes from antiquity.
I
THE VEIL
The boundary between the Mortal World and the Unseen shall endure.
No Child of the Unseen shall knowingly expose the true nature of the Realms to humanity.
The worlds may touch.
They may influence one another.
They may even produce bloodlines that belong to both.
But the Veil itself must not be broken.
II
THE BALANCE
No Genos shall claim absolute dominion over another.
The Children of the Unseen are not equal in power, nature, or purpose.
But none was created to rule all others.
Strength does not establish righteousness.
Age does not establish sovereignty.
Power does not establish ownership.
The Balance belongs to no one.
III
THE BLOOD
Blood is sacred. It carries memory, inheritance, power, and consequence.
To take the blood of another Child of the Unseen is to enter into an unseen covenant with that being.
Creation, transformation, binding, and destruction through blood shall therefore never be undertaken without consequence.
What is joined by blood cannot always be separated by will.
IV
THE OLD BLOOD
The ancient bloodlines of humanity shall not be extinguished without cause.
Some descend from peoples and houses whose origins reach into the earliest history of the Realms.
Their blood may carry dormant powers, ancient covenants, or connections long forgotten.
To destroy such a lineage is therefore not merely to kill its members. It may be to erase a part of the ancient order itself.
V
THE GENOS
No Genos shall be hunted to extinction.
Each Child of the Unseen possesses its own nature, territory, traditions, and place within the Balance.
Disputes between the Genos may be settled. Blood debts may be claimed.
Crimes may be punished. But extermination is forbidden.
The Realms require difference to survive.
VI
THE WATCHTOWERS
The Four Watchtowers shall remain inviolate.
Fire. Earth. Wind. Water.
No Genos may claim them as personal dominion. No army may occupy them.
No blood shall knowingly be spilled upon their sacred stones.
They are older than the kingdoms of men and older than the dominion of the Revenants.
They belong to the Balance.
VII
THE DEAD
Death shall not be violated without consequence.
The dead belong beyond the Veil. No soul shall be compelled to return merely because another desires it.
Those who cross the boundary between life and death enter into a covenant from which there may be no true return.
The creation of the Revenants would one day place this Article among the most contested laws of the Canon.
VIII
THE PROPHECIES
The words of the Oracles shall not be silenced because they are feared.
A prophecy may be concealed from the unprepared.
Its meaning may be debated. Its fulfillment may be resisted.
But its words shall not be destroyed.
For what is foretold belongs to no ruler.
IX
THE FORBIDDEN
Certain powers shall remain untouched.
Certain places shall remain unentered.
Certain names shall remain unspoken.
Certain things shall remain asleep.
No Child shall pursue forbidden knowledge merely because it may be obtained.
For there are powers in the Unseen whose existence is not permission for their use.
X
THE MORTAL WORLD
The Mortal World shall remain mortal.
The Children of the Unseen may walk among humanity.
They may love mortals, protect them, deceive them, influence them, and become part of their history.
But they shall not openly proclaim themselves gods.
Humanity must never become a kingdom of the Unseen.
XI
THE PRICE OF POWER
No invocation is without consequence.
No crossing of the Veil is without cost.
No bargain with a power beyond it is without debt.
Magic may be wielded.
Power may be inherited.
But neither may be possessed without responsibility.
XII
THE CHILDREN
No child shall bear the sins of its parents.
Blood determines inheritance.
It does not determine destiny.
No Child of the Unseen shall be condemned solely for the nature of its birth, its blood, or the Genos from which it descends.
This Article has been broken more times than any other.
THE LAST PRINCIPLE
XIII
No guardian is greater than the thing it guards.
No Lord.
No Oracle.
No Watcher.
No King.
No Child.
The Balance must survive those entrusted to preserve it.
For the greatest danger to any sacred order is not always the enemy beyond its walls.
Sometimes it is the hand that claims to protect it.
THE FOUR WATCHTOWERS
The Pillars of the Balance
Before the kingdoms of men, the Four Watchtowers stood around the Forbidden Forest. They were not built by kings.
They were not temples to any mortal god.
They were established as guardians of the Balance, each bound to one of the primordial elements through which the Children of the Unseen understood the natural and supernatural world.
FIRE. EARTH. WIND. WATER.
Together, they form the oldest sacred order recognized by the Canon.
Their purpose is not dominion. Their purpose is guardianship.
FIRE
The Watchtower of Fire
Fire represents transformation, will, destruction, and renewal. Its keepers safeguard the knowledge of forces that can create as readily as they can destroy.
The Canon forbids the use of the Fire Watchtower for conquest or the deliberate destruction of another Genos.
Fire may illuminate.
Fire may purify.
Fire may destroy.
But no one may claim to command it without consequence.
EARTH
The Watchtower of Earth
Earth represents life, memory, endurance, blood, and the ancient foundations of the Realms.
Its stones are believed to remember what has been forgotten by those who walk upon them.
The Earth Watchtower therefore became a place of preservation.
Ancient bloodlines, relics, oaths, and records were entrusted to its guardians.
Nothing buried beneath its protection may be disturbed without cause.
WIND
The Watchtower of Wind
Wind represents movement, knowledge, prophecy, and the unseen currents that connect distant places.
Its guardians became closely associated with the Oracles and those who interpreted signs from beyond the ordinary world.
The Canon recognizes that knowledge cannot always be controlled. But neither can it always be safely revealed.
The Watchtower therefore preserves a fundamental principle:
To know what is coming is not to possess the power to prevent it.
WATER
The Watchtower of Water
Water represents life, death, memory, emotion, and passage.
It is the element most closely associated with the boundary between worlds.
Its waters are said to reflect what lies beneath appearances and to preserve echoes of things that have passed beyond the Veil.
For this reason, the Water Watchtower is governed by some of the oldest restrictions in the Canon.
Certain rites may be performed there.
Others are forbidden.
Some have been forgotten entirely.
THE FOURFOLD COVENANT
The Watchtowers are not independent.
They form a single sacred system.
Fire transforms.
Earth preserves.
Wind reveals.
Water remembers.
When the Four remain in Balance, the Veil remains stable. When one is corrupted, the others are affected.
And should all four fall into disorder, the consequences would reach beyond the Unseen.
They would reach the Mortal World.
CONSILUIM
The Great Gathering
THE CONCILIUM
It came to pass that the mightiest and wisest among the races of the Unseen were summoned to a single gathering. Alphas, Elders, Supremes, Lords, and Masters crossed ancient boundaries and assembled in council to deliberate upon the laws that would govern the Unseen Realm.
What was agreed upon, written, and signed in blood became law,
Under penalty of death.
This canon is sacred.
